Stanford Hmong High School Outreach Program

With Stanford Hmong Student Union

Project Type. Learning Experience Designer, Youth Mentor

Project Brief. The Stanford Hmong Outreach Program Promoting Education (SHOPPE) is an academically enriching program that provides high school students the opportunity to experience and preview college life. The program is open to all Hmong high school students who aspire to attend college.

Project Overview. We designed this program so that students who participate gain the knowledge and tools to prepare for and apply to college.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT

Hmong students are underrepresented in college and higher education, with even fewer applying to prestigious universities like the Ivy Leagues and Stanford due to feelings of inadequacy. Understanding how Hmong identity intersects with the academic realm sheds light on this issue.

To support Hmong students in pursuing higher education, resources for college preparation, admissions guidance, essay writing assistance, and navigating college life are invaluable.

POV

As a Hmong-American student, I understand firsthand the challenges that many Hmong students face, including feelings of inadequacy and a lack of resources.

Growing up, I witnessed the barriers that hindered many Hmong students from accessing higher education, particularly the lack of guidance and support in navigating the college admissions process. Many of us are first-generation college students, and the complexities of college applications, financial aid, and campus life can be overwhelming without proper guidance.

I believe we can bridge this gap by providing resources and support to Hmong students aspiring to pursue higher education. By offering college preparation workshops, admissions guidance, and essay writing assistance, we can equip Hmong students with the tools and confidence needed to succeed academically.

By empowering Hmong students to pursue higher education, we can break the cycle of underrepresentation and inspire future generations to achieve their academic goals. I am dedicated to giving back to my community and ensuring that every Hmong student has the opportunity to fulfill their potential.

College Admissions Overview

The College Admissions Overview Workshop provides invaluable insight and guidance to Hmong high school students seeking to navigate the complex college admissions process. This workshop is particularly significant for the Hmong community, where resources and information about higher education opportunities are often limited.

Writing Workshop

Through the Narrative Writing workshop within the Stanford Hmong Outreach Program Promoting Education (SHOPPE) I led a group of High School SHOPPE students through a dynamic session designed to enhance students' storytelling skills and cultivate their ability to craft compelling narratives. This workshop is especially beneficial for Hmong high school students, offering them a creative outlet and a platform to express their unique experiences and perspectives.

During this workshop, students explore the art of narrative writing, learning how to create vivid and engaging stories that captivate readers. They delve into the use of descriptive language, sensory details, and imagery to bring their narratives to life, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in the story. Students also learn about narrative structure, character development, and the importance of pacing and tension in storytelling.

Culture Workshop

The Culture Workshop within the Stanford Hmong Outreach Program Promoting Education (SHOPPE) is a transformative experience that celebrates and explores the rich history and traditions of the Hmong people. This workshop is designed to provide Hmong high school students with a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage and its significance in shaping identity, perspectives, and life experiences.

During this workshop, I helped students delve into the history, customs, and traditions of the Hmong people, tracing their journey from ancient times to the present day. Through engaging presentations, interactive discussions, and storytelling, students gain insight into the resilience, strength, and values inherent in Hmong culture.

By understanding and embracing their cultural heritage, students are empowered to navigate the challenges of college life with confidence and pride.
